How to Make Chai FAQs

How do you make vegan Chai?

Vegan Chai is very simple to make, simply follow our above instructions, replacing cows milk for your plant-based milk of choice. At Chai Guys, we use (and strongly recommend) Oatly's barista edition oat milk.

How long should you steep Chai?

For a perfect Indian Chai, we recommend boiling tea and spices for two and a half minutes. For a stronger brew that gets more flavour out of the spices and bitterness from the tea, brew for three or more minutes.

Can you make Chai with tea bags?

It is possible to brew chai with a tea bag, but the flavours are never quite as strong and the results are not quite as delicious compared to authentically brewed Chai. That's why we always brew Chai using the traditional method; with loose spices and leaves strained after cooking.

Is it 'Chai' or 'Chai tea'?

'Chai' literally translates to 'tea' in many different languages, including Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu and more. Therefore, 'Chai tea' literally means 'tea tea', which of course doesn't make sense! This is why we simply call our drinks 'Chai'.

Add fresh ginger to your Chai

If you want to add a little zing to your Chai - particularly for Masala Chai - we recommend adding up to two inches of fresh ginger root to your brew.

Ginger gives the Chai a refreshing lift that delicately compliments the more finely ground spices in the masala spice blend.

Learn how to Make the best Chai, every time

We hope this page with detailed instructions on how to brew Chai was helpful for you, because it means a lot to us to educate and introduce new people into the wonderful world of truly authentic Chai.

Chai Guys exists because we were disappointed by the lack of authentic representation Chai gets in the western world. Instead of soul-warming, luscious and enticing drinks so easily found across South Asia, Chai in the western world is mainly known as an overly sweet, almost gimmicky drink, often mass-produced as an instant powder beverage.

Our mission was to challenge this view on Chai and turn it into a morning drink choice to rival that of coffee. Every day, as more people discover our brand, they get to enjoy Chai as it was always made to be.
